Community Development
In South Africa, the decades of apartheid have left millions of people
in dismal living conditions. High unemployment, poor nutrition, inadequate
schools, marginal health care systems, violence, and hopelessness dominate
the black townships of South Africa.
The people in the townships are
greatly helped through AE's Community Development Program as it trains and
empowers respected Christian leaders living in their areas. The Program is an intensely practical 36 months
course with several three-week theory modules. Once complete, participants
have the skills to mobilize and establish stainable small businesses such as
brick-making, dry cleaners, poultry farming, wire fencing and other
self-help ventures. They are also encouraged to develop partnerships with
other agencies to share skills and resources. Participants also learn how
to integrate their faith and demonstrate Christ's love.
